Gold-winning athlete looks to improve her skills even more
In a recent interclub competition, the Kelowna Skating Club claimed a plethora of medals, more than any other team at the event.
Leading the way was Amy Kim, who won a trio of gold, winning the STAR seven women, juvenile women under-14, and the creative improv level four events.
The 13-year-old athlete has a rigorous training schedule that includes daily after school sessions, and early morning skates.
“It’s hard sometimes because I have homework to do and some other off ice training to do as well,” Kim told Kelowna10. “But I figure out how to balance it.”
She said the next level for herself as a figure skater would be to have consistently clean skates with no mistakes, and to achieve higher level jumps, overall seeking improvement to her skills on the ice.
“I feel like my goal is, even though at the competition I did get first, I feel like I wasn’t very satisfied with my skate,” she explained. “I did make some mistakes and I just wish I can be happy and satisfied with my program.”
She said she is taking things step-by-step for now, but has big aspirations for the future and hopes that she’ll have the opportunity to skate at an Olympic level one day.
“You just have to go for it, you need to take risks,” Kim proudly said.
