Man arrested after major police response

Three-hour situation ends

Kelowna RCMP arrested a man after special units were called in to a potentially dangerous situation on the 1700 block of Byrns Rd.

Police responded shortly before noon Sunday to a report of a distraught man with a weapon.

Officers immediately flooded the area and determined the suspect was in a residence in the area, police said.

A portion of Byrns Road between Benvoulin Road and Burtch Road was closed off.

The Southeast District Critical Incident Program’s Emergency Response Team was on scene along with a Critical Incident Commander and a Crisis Negotiator.

“A Kelowna man was apprehended into custody under the Mental Health Act with the assistance of the tactical Emergency Response Team and subsequently transported to hospital for further assessment,” Cst. Solana Paré of the Kelowna RCMP said in a media release issued at 3:30 p.m.

“Police thank the public for their patience and understanding while we worked to resolve this incident safely.”

Byrns Rd. was re-opened.

Police said no further information is being released at this time.
