The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has launched a new online fundraiser called Love Local BC to help engage in more community support for Food Banks BC and local businesses.

Until Dec. 10, the value of purchases, such as gift cards or silent auction bids, from BCLC’s Love Local BC page go to one of the 11 participating food banks, including the Central Okanagan Food Bank.

BCLC’s Chief Social Purpose Officer Peter ter Weeme said in a news release the initiative was a big win for everyone.

“We’re proud to support communities, non-profit organizations and local businesses throughout the province as part of this important virtual fundraiser that comes at a such a pivotal time of need here in B.C,” ter Weeme said.

Dan Huang-Taylor, Executive Director of Food Banks BC, said the partnership with BCLC is essential to keep helping food banks and making an impact in communities.

“Food Banks BC supports 102 member food banks across British Columbia, providing them with provision funds, food and other services that supports the critical work they are doing to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens,” he said.

BCLC has also partnered with six casinos including Chances Casino Kelowna to host onsite food drives in coordination with the fundraiser and will be collecting non-perishable food items until Dec. 10.

Food Banks BC members provide more than 125,000 meals to people in the province every month through shelters, soup kitchens and school lunch programs. In the last two years, the use of food banks used by seniors has increased 20 per cent.
