Local, nutritious food is a mainstay at this retirement residence

Exceptional cuisine is part of everyday life

Crab cakes with mint & green pea coulis and roasted red pepper relish.

A strawberry glazed barbeque chicken or trout with scalloped potatoes, and garlic stuffed zucchini.

A menu fit for a fine dining restaurant.

But not these meals.

That’s a taste of what those who call the Heritage Retirement Residence home get to indulge in on a regular basis.

Guided by Red Seal Chef Jeremy Schorb, the kitchen at the West Kelowna residence in no stranger to fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

“Many care homes don’t do this,” Schorb explained. “We take the seniors needs first and foremost. Providing local, fresh ingredients with lots of nutrition, because as we get older, we know how important good nutrition is in a diet.”

And to take it a step further, each month the residents are treated to the Living Loving Local program.

Here, chef Jeremy features two signature in-season fruits, vegetables, or meats.

For June, peas and strawberries were on the menu.

“I always challenge myself to incorporate the ingredients into as many different meals as possible,” Schorb added.

And this challenge is rewarded when he sees the reaction of the residents and their friends and family who are often invited for the monthly occasion.

“Sometimes it is hard to get out of the dining room without getting my praises,” he laughed. “But at the end of the day, we are in the business of service and the biggest reward is being able to service the residents and enrich their lives as they get older.”
