'Do what you want to do with your life. Don’t let age stop you.'
Excitement and disbelief are how Alice Roshinsky described making the quarter-finals of a contest to be on the cover of Inked magazine.
“I remember when I first started this, I thought, ‘If I make it to the Top 20, I’ll be happy’,” she told Kelowna10. “I’m so thankful for everyone that has taken time out of their day to vote for me. I’m so thankful for my friends and my family, and all my co-workers and all my fans out there.”
The 61-year-old grandmother has finished in the top spot in all her qualifiers up to this point.
Thousands of women from all over the world are vying for the cover, with the winner announced later in April.
Roshinsky has lived in the city for almost three decades and is a well-known face at Audi Kelowna where she’s worked for the last 13 years.
Her endeavour into the world of tattoos started much later than many would expect, with Roshinsky not putting gun-to-skin until she was in her 40s.
She was inspired by her 16-year-old son at the time and said one tattoo turned to two, and now she is here.
Among the prizes for the winner of the Inked Magazine Cover Girl contest is $25,000, along with a two-day tattoo session with top artist Ryan Ashley.
Winning, she said, would send an empowering message to women her age.
“I just feel like an inspiration for older women out there. Do what you want to do with your life. Don’t let age stop you. If there is something that you want to do, go for it,” she said.
Anyone can vote once a day for free, or, to make multiple choices, votes can be ‘purchased’ with proceeds going towards the non-profit MusiCares. It provides health and welfare services to the music community.
