Kelowna Fringe Preview: Special Guest

Kelowna playwright deconstructs action movies in his play.

The Kelowna International Fringe Festival is back, and Kelowna10 is swinging by local rehearsals to give you a glimpse of what to expect and decide what you might want to see.

Special Guest

For Gil Stubbs and Lyle Hamilton, the security technicians responsible for monitoring the CCTV cameras at the top secret Weiss Diamonds compound in the Northwest Territories, Canada, one day blurs into the next. The monotony of their job comes to an abrupt end, however, with the arrival of two strangers—a new security technician called Rosamund Wood and a famous English secret agent. Suddenly, Gil and Lyle find themselves caught up in a game of international espionage—and the fate of the world hangs in the balance!

What is the inspiration behind the performance?

“I was in Bonnie Gratz’s playwriting class, and I was rewatching a bunch of 1970s Roger Moore, James Bond movies. And so, it seemed like a great thing to try to do a pastiche of. I also listen to lots of podcasts that are about old movies, and that was a big source of inspiration to write,” Beaulne said.

Why should people see it?

“Because of the fabulous actors and because I think it’s a really fun and inventive way of looking at action movies and deconstructing them a little bit,” Beaulne explained. “We’re going to have some cool tech stuff. So, we’re going to have the actual movie playing, and then we’re going to have the actors sort of commenting on it. So, it should be a really interesting and really good Fringe experience.”
