Kelowna Fringe Preview: Here’s Johnny

An author’s characters come to life in this play

The Kelowna International Fringe Festival is back, and Kelowna10 is swinging by local early rehearsals to give you a glimpse of what to expect and decide what you might want to see.

Here’s Johnny

This play by Jessica Hamilton takes place in Galveston, Texas in 1977. Once renowned author Johnny takes a working vacation with his wife Anna in the hopes of gaining inspiration for his long uncompleted novel. Facing a looming deadline, writer's block, and many distractions this dramatic comedy explores a writer's relationships both real and imagined.

What is the inspiration behind the performance?

“The two inspirations were Johnny Depp and The Shining, I am very much a Stephen King fan, and The Shining is one of my favourite movies. I came across a picture on Google of Johnny Depp sitting at a desk with a typewriter, and so I was like, ‘here’s Johnny’. Everybody thought it was The Shining reference first, but it was actually the picture of Johnny that came first, and then I worked on the play [in a] class at New Vintage Theatre, where it became more Shining inspired,” Hamilton told Kelowna10.

Why should people see it?

“It’s a fun little drama, it’s only 30 minutes long, and it’ll be fun because [Johnny’s] characters come to life to bug him about the plot,” she said. “I hope everyone has fun with it.”
