Inspirational Kelowna man goes E-foiling

One of the stories on Kelowna10 that had people talking.

No arms, no legs, no problem for Chris Koch

  • Inspirational local takes flight on E-foil on Okanagan Lake
  • He quickly got the hang of things
  • E-foiling is like surfing but above the water line

For Kelowna's inspirational Chris Koch, addressing big crowds or getting stuck into another fundraising campaign is all part of his day.

Koch, who has no arms or legs, has made a name for himself for spreading his motivational ‘If I Can’ message of hope around the world. He’s best known for completing marathons on his skateboard.

He's currently growing a moustache - with a healthy touch of dye - for Movember, and recently presented yet another of his motivational talks to a group in Ontario.

But his exploits on Okanagan Lake a few months ago are extraordinary.

Koch took to the waters to try out innovative electric surfing equipment created by Kelowna company MSLR Electric E-Foil.

CEO and Founder, Carey Missler, who is an award-winning filmmaker and entrepreneur, produced a video called ‘Nothing is Impossible with Chris Koch,’ in which the crew documents his adventure on their patent pending product.

The experience is more akin to flying than surfing and it appears Koch earned his wings quickly.

“Chris is by far the fastest learner I’ve ever taken out,” MSLR Electric’s Taylor Coulthard said in the video. “I was really, really impressed. It’s the first time I’ve done a lesson and my student took off on me and I couldn’t keep up to them.”

Coulthard’s colleague Mike Prince was also delighted at how quickly Koch picked things up.

“I was amazed. Chris absolutely crushed it,” Prince, said. “He was running his own remote.”

Koch had the special remote speed control technology taped to him so he was able to take the full reins of the futuristic surfing equipment. While that meant he wasn’t able to spread out his shortened limbs for additional balance, that didn’t faze him.

“Actually, I’m surprised how well it worked so quickly. It was awesome,” he said.

The video shows Koch getting up on the new technology and flying across the water.

According to their website, MSLR Electric Inc. has filed several patents, which include some ‘unseen industry innovations.’ It says their product is designed and built by passionate surfers and water enthusiasts.

‘Experience Electric E-Foil eco friendly Flight! It’s an incredible feeling that everyone should - and can experience,’ their website adds.

And for Chris Koch, it’s another groundbreaking adventure that he can sign off on.
