Dirty dinner theatre returns with a silly sexy comedy

A look at sex and the means we employ in order to have it

A local, woman-powered theatre group, The Virago Collective, is bringing their take on dinner theatre back to Kelowna after a long hiatus.

What was meant to be an ongoing series of comedic and nonconventional shows accompanied by full menu service throughout, was halted due to COVID-19 restrictions.

But now they’re ready for a provocative return: Dirty Dinner Theatre is back with the one-act play ‘Five Times in One Night’.

“The show is about five different couples, and their individual relationships with themselves as well as their sexual relationships,” stage manager Josie Morrow told Kelowna10. “It features two actors who are playing five characters, so you see the same actors portray the different couples.”

Placing the action on-stage at DunnEnzies’ Mission location gives the fringe-style show an accessible edge, removing some of the barriers people face when considering what live performances to take in.

The acting troupe said, this is not your typical dinner theatre.

“This is less expensive, less conservative, and more casual. We hope people will feel less intimidated to give theatre a try; people who love film, improv, or live music but who don’t think theatre is ‘for them’.”

The director and co-founder of the collective, Elana Bizovie describes the play as a silly sexy comedy with a lot of heart, that reminds us that we’re all the same when the lights go out; nobody knows what to do or how to do it, and sometimes all we can do is laugh about it.

Music lovers will be glad to hear there will be live music performances from local artists throughout the show.

“I love that this is a show that anyone who's been in an intimate relationship can relate to in some way, shape or form,” Morrow said.

The production still has three performances to go: February 27th, 28th and March 1st at 8pm at DunnEnzies Pizza, Mission (4638 Lakeshore Rd).

Tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite.
