If you named your daughter Olivia this year, you are not alone

Province releases annual list of most popular baby names

  • Number of babies born is less than last year

The Ministry of Health announced its annual list of most popular baby names for 2021 in British Columbia and topping it is one that’s been in the lead for the past few years.

For the fifth year in a row, Olivia tops the charts for the most popular name for babies born this year in the province.

According to the Vital Statistics Agency, Olivia is followed by Liam, Noah, Jack, Emma, Benjamin, Theodore, Oliver, and Charlotte.

The preliminary figures were taken from Jan. 1 to Dec. 15, 2021.

Last year, 239 babies were named Oliva – the most in the province -- followed by Liam, Oliver, Noah, Lucas, Emma, Theodore, Benjamin, Ethan, and Charlotte.

Stats only list names that occur five or more times.

Some unique girls’ names in 2020 included Wynter (6), Ocean (8), Navy (9), Maple (8), and Bronwyn (5). Unique boys’ names were Axton (6), Boston (9), Fox (11), Onyx (6), and Sunny (5)

The number of babies born in 2021 is down from last year. From Jan. 1 to Dec. 15 this year, 40,333 babies were born in B.C., compared to 42,413 last year.
