How Kelowna is stepping up in a time of need

Businesses and organizations lending their support

In the face of dark and uncertain times, there seems to be no shortage of businesses and organizations lending their support to provide aid and relief during theses wildfires in the Okanagan.

Among the many local businesses and organizations stepping up are Mamas for Mamas, and Made in India restaurant.

Mamas for Mamas is directing families towards essential resources, including childcare and mental health support. They collaborate closely with various agencies to identify and provide access to the necessary services for those requiring assistance. While their primary focus is aiding families with infants and young children, their support has extended to encompass all evacuated families. They provide crucial items such as formula, baby food, and blankets. Additionally, the organization partners with restaurants to effectively redistribute surplus food and collaborates with businesses that offer storage facilities to accommodate the influx of donations.

“We're just doing what mamas do. We are redistributing good and trying to make sure no one's falling through the cracks,” founder Shannon Christensen told Kelowna10. “Nobody really knew where to go. There was a little bit of a lack of direction in the beginning because everybody was just in chaos, and they were in panic. I figured the best thing we can do is approach it with a calm head and figure out how we can redistribute everything that people are trying to give.”

She’s heard a lot of stories from evacuees in distressing situations and is assuring those of continued support.

“It's unbelievably sad. There are a lot of people who were away, and their kids were evacuated and they're trying to reconnect. There are emotional issues that are really impacting these families on top of these logistical issues,” Christensen said. “We're here to make sure that families know that they're not doing this alone and that if you need a place to belong, especially in a time like this.”

Meanwhile, another business making a significant contribution is the Made in India restaurant. In recent days, they have been stationed at Prospera Place, providing meals to evacuees, and delivering food to frontline workers. Additionally, they are offering complimentary meals at their establishments for individuals in need.

Owner Brijesh Negi expressed his dedication to supporting the community, emphasizing that they are prepared to continue this assistance for as long as necessary.

“It might take four or five days or a week, but we are ready to help them,” he said. “They need lunch, dinner, whatever they need, we will help them.”

Negi has also come across stories from those who have been impacted by the fires. He feels sadness, but said it’s in times like these that the community helps and steps up.

“As a community member, I think this is a very tough time for everyone and especially for the people affected by the current fire situation, so we need to help them,” he explained.

Anyone that needs assistance can register with Emergency Social Services.
