Warning: this video contains some graphic images.

A few weeks ago, Big Ginger from 103.1 Beach Radio experienced a distressing incident while walking his dog, Obi.

They were attacked by an off-leash dog, leaving Obi with torn skin, multiple punctures, and lacerations across his body.

So, what should you do if your dog is being attacked?

Dan Maja, Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer for the Regional District of Central Okanagan, shared some valuable tips.

Check out the video for some insight.

Addressing an attack:

  • Use your voice to call for help and shout commands like "Stop!" or "No!" to distract the attacking dog.
  • Find the other dog's owner or have someone nearby locate them; they are most likely to regain control.
  • Collect witness information, take photos of the attacking dog, and obtain the owner's identification and contact details.
  • After the incident, take your dog to the vet and report the attack to RDCO Animal Control at 250-469-6284.

Preventing an attack:

  • Proactively avoid aggressive dogs and take steps to prevent your dog from biting or attacking others.
  • Keep your dog securely fenced in your yard and always on a leash in public to maintain control.
  • Ensure your dog receives proper training and socialization to encourage good behavior and reduce aggression.
  • Always supervise your dog around other people or animals, especially if they’ve shown signs of aggression.
  • Consider spaying or neutering your dog to help reduce aggression and lower the risk of attacks.
