Here's what Kelowna thinks about the new king

First coronation in Britain for 70 years

The coronation of King Charles III will be the first such occasion for 70 years and there will also be an iconic Canadian presence with the RCMP playing a centre-stage role.

Although the event is steeped in ancient tradition, there will be some modern elements in what will be a trimmed down event compared to the grandeur of the 1953 occasion for then Queen Elizabeth II. For example, Charles and Camilla, the queen consort, will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the horse-drawn but air-conditioned Diamond Jubilee State Coach used for Queen Elizabeth’s 60th anniversary in 2012.

The far less comfortable 260-year-old Gold State Coach will be used by the couple for their return trip to the palace after they are formally crowned.

The 4,000 kilogram coach needs eight horses to move it and it will be escorted by five RCMP riders. Members of the various Canadian armed forces will also be represented along the route.

A full-scale rehearsal for the spectacle took place between midnight and 3 a.m. earlier this week.

The right royal weekend of pomp and ceremony will wrap up at Windsor Castle Sunday with the Coronation Concert featuring major A-listers including American Idol judges Katy Perry and Lionel Ritchie and an appearance from Tom Cruise.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth last year we asked people in Kelowna what they thought of Charles as King.
