See how these hand-made wax candles are made

From hive to home

On his first visit to Arlo's Honey Farm in the spring, Big Ginger from 103.1 Beach Radio, learned all about bees, and why they play an important role in nature.

For this second visit, the hives were quiet, and the bees tucked away for winter, but there was still some action going on.

Lisa St. Laurent, the farm's owner, enlightened Big Ginger about the exquisite process of crafting bees wax candles. These ones boast a natural allure, burning both long and clean.

The work involves pouring the melted wax into molds. Once cooled they can be carefully eased out.

“We harvest beeswax when we're in our honey production, and as we're scraping down the cappings to open up the honey, we collect those cappings and melt them down,” she explained.

Cappings are the thin layer of new wax that bees build over the top of cured (or dried) honey.

"We also scrape them off the tops of the honey [superstructure]."
