The cedar barrel sauna that's picking up steam
A local former construction worker is turning his hand to a unique business that sure seems to be warming up.
Jacob Jobst makes cedar barrel saunas, and his display at the Kelowna Spring Home Show certainly captured the attention of attendees.
Woodland Saunas Inc. creates various sized saunas made from Interior and Coastal cedar, and the cute and cozy barrel-shaped structures are very functional.
“It’s a very unique design. It’s not something you see every day,” Jobst told Kelowna10. “The barrel shape helps with the sauna heating up. The hot air comes up and rolls around the roof and comes down and recirculates.”
The wood is resistant to decay and insects and gives off a natural aroma that Jobst said adds to the whole relaxation experience. As an add-on, you can order a window to soak up any particular view or aspect on your property.
The saunas can be made up to 10-feet wide, and feature all the features you’d see in a traditional model. They run on both electric and woodstove heaters.
The construction process can take up to four days, all done at his parents' cherry farm in Oyama.
Jobst said he's seeing a positive demand for his creation.
“I’ve started about five months ago and the reception has been good. A lot of people have been coming by at the home show and I think people are really interested in saunas these days,” he explained. “The views here [in the Okanagan] are amazing and the whole atmosphere is the right place for it.”
