Downtown affordable housing project approved

The 20-storey tower will have 162 apartments, 14 townhomes, as well as a daycare and upper floor courtyard.

Kelowna lawmakers have unanimously approved a much-needed affordable housing project downtown, with many calling it a welcome addition to the city.

The building will include 176 affordable rental units, split between 162 apartments and 14 townhomes. Just shy of a quarter of the apartments will have three bedrooms.

“This ticks so many boxes,” Coun. Loyal Wooldridge said Tuesday night. “It delivers the dire need of more affordable rental housing, purpose built, in an urban centre.”

The 20-story project will include a daycare, three level parkade, private fourth floor courtyard, and eighth floor rooftop garden with common areas and planter boxes.

It will be built along Bertram St., just north of Bernard Ave.

The area is only zoned for 12-storeys, but council approved the additional eight floors, saying it was appropriate for the area and welcome in a project of this type.

Mayor Colin Basran said the project came about largely due to the city’s “great relationship” with the provincial government and B.C. housing.
