‘Don’t carry shame around your mistakes’: Kelowna artist hopes to heal with music

Artist releases new single after celebrating year of sobriety

  • ‘Drift’ is the first single released for upcoming EP
  • Song is about numbing through vices
  • Mylo Quinn writes, sings, and produces music

Last month, a song about numbing emotions and hardships through vices opened the conversation about substance use.

Kelowna-based solo artist, Mylo Quinn, is behind the track. The musician layers vocals to bring a unique sound to his music.

‘Drift’, featuring local artist Shalina Richards, was released on several streaming platforms as the first single ahead of Quinn’s EP ‘Light’, which will be released in the coming months.

“The whole EP tells the story of recovery and substance abuse,” Quinn told Kelowna10.

“Being at the start of the record, [this song has] the darkest tone, but you have to start at the bottom before you can build yourself up again.”

Quinn said working on this track helped him overcome his own past with substance use. The release of the single helped some of his friends connect with the message of sobriety.

“All of the sudden it sets off this chain reaction because we all have something we’re going through and we all deal with it in our own way,” he said..

“I think seeing other people overcome it can give you the ability and the strength to want to do it yourself.”

He has some advice for others who are going through tough times.

“If you can, try not to carry shame around your mistakes and your shortcomings in the eyes of society or your peers,” Quinn said.

“We’re all human, you’re not going to get this right first try. So, don’t be so hard on yourself if you slip and have to pick yourself back up again.”
