Cyclist seriously hurt in Rail Trail assault

17-year-old assaulted and robbed during the afternoon

  • Attack happened up the trail from Dilworth Rd
  • Police report two 'transient men' are suspects
  • Dog unit could not locate suspects

A teenager riding his bike along the Rail Trail has suffered serious injuries after being attacked and robbed by what police reported as two ‘transient’ men.

The incident happened mid-afternoon Tuesday on the popular bike and walking trail east of Dilworth Road and near the pedestrian bridge. The small wooden bridge is in a treed area over the creek and connects the paved trail to dirt trails behind business parking lots on Enterprise Way.

Police said the 17-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

A GoFundMe account set up by the mother of the victim's friends reported he'd suffered a fractured skull and collapsed lung.

"We are not sure how long he will be off work and school but we want to help do what we can. If anyone can donate anything at all we would appreciate it. Everything he had with him was taken in the attack, including his bike (which was found dumped in Mission creek), shoes and cell phone," the post read.

Kelowna RCMP are searching for two suspects who they said assaulted the teen just after 3 p.m. and stole his bicycle, shoes and cell phone.

Officers and a canine unit searched the area, but the suspects were not located. The victim’s bicycle and shoes were recovered near the creek.

The two suspects are described as Caucasian males. One has light blonde Mohawk-style hair. He was wearing a blue jacket and was riding a white bicycle. This suspect may have facial injuries to his right cheek.

The other suspect was wearing a black hoodie and carrying a back or dark grey backpack.

In a media release, Adam MacIntosh, Operations Officer– Kelowna RCMP, called for the public to share any information about the incident.

“As a society we must condemn the criminal actions of these two suspects. As a police officer, I will be utilizing all resources available to support the identification of these two persons in order collect the evidence to bring them before the courts,” MacIntosh said.
