Construction begins on new pathway
Construction is underway in City Park to improve the beach, walkways, and amenities.
The city is currently in the second phase of its five-phase plan to enhance the park. This phase will include adding more landscaping and work along the beach, as well as new lighting, and additional park furniture.
“It’s about 350 metres from the Hot Sands washroom to the Cold Sands washroom,” Todd DeGruchy, Senior Project Manager, told Kelowna10.
“We’re moving the existing paver lay pathway that is about three and a half metres wide, with a new six-metre-wide concrete multiuse path.”
Over the coming weeks, as construction gets underway removing the old pathway, a pedestrian and bike detour will be in place through the park.
The first part of construction will be focused on foreshore protection work around the beach.
“We’re adding [anchored] logs, and trees, and plantings along the beach as well, to try to retain some of the soils and sands that migrate into the lake,” DeGruchy explained.
Additional turf and log edging will also be added at the beach.
Phase one of the project was completed in 2010, with a multi-use path from the bridge to Hot Sands Beach. Future phases will include a pier and gathering circle, alternate multi-use paths, and separated cycle paths.
Construction for phase two is scheduled to be complete in June.
