Kelowna author on how love doesn’t vanish when someone passes away
Kelowna author Annie Caboose has faced life’s toughest challenges with grace and creativity.
After battling two breast cancer diagnoses, she channeled her strength into writing heartfelt children’s books, starting with her debut, Where Is Love.
The idea for the book was born on the same day she received her first diagnosis.
“It was after the initial surgery that we found the tumors, and that kind of set me back—a setback with the book and a setback with cancer,” Caboose told Kelowna10. “I have a great oncologist and a great team. They got me into chemo, and I was able to keep the journey of my book going while fighting cancer.”
The children's story follows an ant named Annie who befriends a flower called Love. One day, Annie discovers that Love is missing. Guided by a rhyme Love once told her, Annie embarks on an adventurous journey to find her friend.
Caboose revealed that her inspiration for the book stemmed from the loss of her father, followed by her mother’s passing 20 years later. These experiences gave her the clarity and purpose to deliver an important message through her story.
“I wanted to share the message that love doesn’t die just because someone passes away,” Caboose said. “At the time, I couldn’t find a children’s book that conveyed this message in the way I envisioned, so I wrote Where Is Love.”
The book is already earning recognition, being nominated for several awards, and winning gold at the annual Kiddable book awards for Best Picture Book. Caboose has hinted that more stories are on the way.
“I’ve got a few up my sleeve. The next one’s finished,” she teased. “It’s about a quirky little duck named Quigley, inspired by a duck I saw on the lake one day. It had a very particular quack, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s obnoxious and crazy!’”
Where Is Love is available on Amazon or through Caboose’s website.
