Body of snowboarder found at Big White

Man, 42, had gone missing after his last run of the day in the backcountry.

The body of the snowboarder who had been reported overdue at Big White has been found.

Kelowna RCMP confirmed Monday afternoon that a Search and Rescue crew along with Big White Ski Patrol located the body late morning.

The 42-year-old man from Kelowna had been snowboarding with friends when he was last seen at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Gem Lake chair lift as he prepared to do his last run of the day.

A spokesperson from Big White said he had gone out of bounds for that last run.

A recovery effort was underway Monday afternoon with assistance from the Penticton and District Search and Rescue - Helicopter External Transport System (PENSAR HETS).

Police said the man’s next of kin had been notified and their thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

The Kelowna Regional RCMP thanked volunteers from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) as well as teams from Vernon (SAR) as well as Penticton (PENSAR) who assisted in the search.

The matter is now in the hands of the BC Coroners Service.
