From orthopedic footwear to multi-billion dollar fashion icon
In the realm of iconic brands, Birkenstock has made substantial strides in the footwear industry.
Most notably, the company marked a significant milestone by making its debut on the New York Stock Exchange recently, trading under the symbol "BIRK” making the company worth billions.
The footwear has a long history dating back 250 years in Germany.
Traditionally recognized for their orthopedic use rather than their fashion appeal, these sandals have undergone a remarkable transformation with a massive following that includes A-list celebrities such as Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.
Their iconic status received a significant boost this year when they made a cameo in the blockbuster film "Barbie."
“It just showcased and highlighted how popular they really are, but it seems like people love the shoe no matter what,” Shayla McLean, Footwear Manager at Orthoquest told Big Ginger from 103.1 Beach Radio.
“Adding a little bit of fun with Barbie has definitely increased people's likability to this.”
McLean has some questions about what the future holds for distributing to smaller retailers now the company has gone public.
“The company did start with family first and they supported a lot of small businesses like ours. And since the switch it’s definitely changed the lens in that,” she said. “From a retail standpoint, we do worry a little bit that they might go away from their family and traditional roots and instead turn more into a fashion company.”
