Apartment building pitched for site of popular Kelowna hostel

New 20-unit building could replace longtime inn

A staple of the Pandosy neighbourhood could soon make way for redevelopment.

A multi-family apartment building is being proposed for the corner of Christelton Avenue and Pandosy Street. Currently, the land houses the Kelowna International Hostel.

Pitched for the site, just south of the Kelowna General Hospital, is a five-floor rental building. It would contain two bachelor, five one-, five two-, and eight three-bedroom units.

Designs detail a ‘generous’ private amenity space, but no details are provided. Renderings for the project showcase a pair of outdoor amenity spaces, on the third floor and rooftop.

There is no parkade. Rather, parking will be surface level, tucked underneath the building.

The project would require rezoning, as the land is currently marked for education, minor institutional or duplex housing.

“The project will provide a strong urban corner situated at the intersection of Pandosy Street and Christleton Avenue,” plans read.

The building will use a mix of materials, like masonry, board and batten fiber cement, and acrylic stucco. Glass balconies with metal frames will be included with each unit.

There is no word on if the hostel would relocate or close down.

The plans have already circulated city hall, but planning staff may still require more information before it comes to council for consideration.
