54-40's drummer's ice stories ahead of Montana's Brier in Kelowna

Keeping the beat for 40 years

Matt Johnson has been keeping the hugely successful Canadian band 54-40 on beat for 40 years.

The drummer joined the Tsawwassen, B.C. outfit in 1985, four years after they were founded.

In an interview with Ara from 103.1 Beach Radio, he recalls being a fan of the band in their early days and having a very good sense of how the songs went, started and ended. So, when the opportunity came to try out as drummer, and they sent him a cassette with a few of their tracks, he was ready.

But there was also a social connection. Johnson knew the band members from a regular musician's pick up hockey league they were all part of.

Forty years later, Johnson and the band will have some more ice stories to tell.

They will launch the 2025 Montana's Brier Curling Championship at the Original 16 Patch on opening night February 28.
